Balancing Quality and Speed
A history of iterative processes
It has long been established that a rigorous and iterative design process stems from large government projects. Quality oversight, and multiple iterations were needed to successfully execute projects such as putting a man on the moon. However, needs shifted, and soon the industry demanded even faster design cycles. “Design and manufacturing in the mid-1970s transformed activities in aerospace with an increasing focus on faster design cycles, more accurate predictive capabilities, and the rise of computer science.” Keane and Near, 2005
Today, while much has changed, there are still key pieces from early design processes that allow us to hold ourselves to high quality standards while completing projects faster. Syncroness has integrated the best of early engineering processes with today’s technology advances, enhanced quality standards, and faster production times into our Agile product development process. Using this process allows for rapid de-risking of technology challenges in new programs and iterative proof of progress and planning to keep even large development efforts on track.
For better or worse, engineering design processes have changed. Demands are higher. Time-to-market needs are increasing. The need to develop products faster has the potential to hinder the quality of product output. While it is vital to bring a product to market quickly to gain an advantage over competitors, sacrificing quality for speed can have severe consequences in the Aerospace, Medical Device and Robotics industries. Conscious management of both speed and quality are necessary for successful product development.
A lack of commitment to quality resulted in the delayed release of CFM International’s LEAP Engine. In its haste to catch up with its competitor Airbus, CFM overlooked a manufacturing flaw in its engines that was only discovered during inspections. Competition is high between companies. Regulations are changing constantly.
As CFM’s case showed us, failing to maintain that relationship between quality and speed can cost a lot more than fines in the end. Launch schedules get interrupted. Confidence in the brand diminishes. Managing the relationship between quality and speed at all times means everyone wins.
How to effectively balance quality and speed
Here at Syncroness, our project design processes allow us to maintain both quality and speed while still aligning with your desired outcomes. We maintain the relationship via numerous key processes.
Rigorous project planning process: We adapt and realign our process to changes to ensure timelines are met.
Quality management systems: We actively monitor and maintain quality standards throughout the entire lifecycle of your project.
Knowledge and expertise: With 20+ years of experience, our teams leverage knowledge from across industries and markets.
Manage scope to fit the timeline and maintain the minimum viable product (MVP): Our team members understand how to manage all the complex pieces in producing that final product. We are skilled at helping our clients to never lose sight of the MVP; we can foresee pitfalls, avoid them, and keep projects on track.
Design considerations: We take into account not only your needs and the product you want to produce, but also consider your unique product positioning and where our designs and services can help you to take your product in the future. Because we understand that good relationships take planning and preparing for the future. We want this relationship to last.
At Syncroness, we are multidisciplinary experts in the product development process. We identify requirements, develop designs to meet those requirements, and prove that the resulting product performs against those requirements. Our product development process is Agile, and comprehensive. We consider not only safety concerns but the details of making sure that products meet government requirements and industry standards. Because our experts become an extension of your team, we make sure that your vision for a product is executed quickly and successfully.
With profound expertise in heavily regulated industries, our commitment to quality is more than a promise, it is our livelihood. Let’s connect today and see how we can deliver quality and speed on your next project.
